Prvá skúšobná plavba lode sa uskutočnila hneď po jej slávnostnom dokončení v roku 1911. Jej prvá cesta sa však začala až 10.apríla 1912 o 12:00 miestneho času v Southamptonských dokoch White Star Line. Na palubu sa nalodilo 2215 členov posádky. Ľudia nazývali túto loď "NEPOTOPITEĽNOU".Loď bola zverená do rúk kapitánovi Eduardovi John Smithovi.Po tejto plavbe mal odísť do dôchodku za svoju celoživotnú prácu ako kapitána pre White Star Line.Avšak ani on, ani nikto iný nevedel, že sa toho dôchodku nedožije.Na palubu sa nalodili cestujúci prvej,druhej a tretej triedy.Prvá trieda bola v tej dobe tá najprepychovejšia a cestovali v nej ľudia z tých najvyšších kruhov. Najznámejšími cestujúcimi boli: John Jacob Astor-najbohatší muž Ameriky-s manželkou, ktorá sa zachránila. John Bruce Ismay-majiteľ Titanicu - prežil. Sir Cosmo Gordon a jeho manželka Duff Gordonová-prežili. Benjamin Guggenhaim-známy záletník - zahynul. Molly Brownová-žena, ktorú nedokázal "potopiť" ani ladovec. Ida a Isidor Strausovci-najstarší pár na lodi-zahynuli. Eduard John Smith-kapitán Titanicu.Odmietol opustiť loď a s ňou sa aj potopil. Ešte počas prvého dňa plavby najskôr zakotvil pri pobreži Írska -Qeenstown, kde nastúpili ešte posledný cestujúci a potom bolo pred ním už len otvórené more a tam číhal na Titanic osud v podobe ľadovca.
Skutočnosti sú podľa výpovede svedkov, ktorí prežili túto katasrofu. A popisujú ju asi takto: Noc bola bezmesačná,ale aprílová obloha nad Atlantikom žiarila tisícom hviezd. Niektorí cestujúci už odišli do svojich kajút,ale väčšina však ešte sedela pri fľašiach šampanského v osvetlených salónoch. Lodný orchester vyhráva najnovšie melódie, ktoré boli práve moderné v Paríži,alebo Londýne. Na hornej palube sa do hrubých šálov obliekalo nespočet cestujúcich,ktorý sa dali hviezdnou oblohou vylákať na prechádzku. Bolo citeľne chladno. Teplomer v krátkej dobe poklesol až skoro k nule - neklamná známka, že sa Titanic priblížil k pásmu plávajúceho ľadu. O 21:40,prijaj rádiotelegrafista správu o blížiacich sa ľadovcoch. Bola z lode Mesaba a varovala, že priamo pred Titanicom je rozsiahle ľadové pole. Rádiotelegrafista však správu na kapitánsky mostík nedoručil, lebo bol práve zamestnaný výnosným súkromným obchodom-vysielal osobné telegramy bohatých cestujúcich na New Foundland. Nedoručil ani výstražnú správu o bezprostrednom nebezpečenstve od neďalekej lode Californian,ktorej kapitán už dal radšej zastaviť stroje svojej lode, než by mal riskovať zrážku s ľadovcom.Už len hodina ostávala do katastrofy. Vtedy sa jej ešte dalo zabrániť. Bezvetrie tiež zhoršovalo včasné zistenie ľadovca. Keby sa bol vtedy zdvihol vietor,narážali by o ľadovec vlny,ktoré by sa oň trieštili,a pena by v tme svetielkovala. O 23:40 spozorovala hliadka čierny tieň priamo pred Titanicom a dala o tom správu na kapitánsky mostík. Tam prvý dôstojník Murdock rýchlo nastavil plný chod. Potom sa však zachoval ako neskúsený nováčik-namiesto toho,aby viedol Titanic na ľadovec pevnou obrnenou provou, nariadil kormidelníkovy prudký obrat doľava. Šesťdesiatšesťtisíc ton ťažká hmota oceľového obra sa nezadržateľne valila zotrvačnosťou vpred,zatiaľ čo prova lode sa stáčala vľavo. Titanic prijal smrteľnú ranu svojou najzraniteľnejšou časťou. V trupe sa pod čiarou ponoru objavili trhliny na dĺžke asi 90 metrov. Najmodernejšiu loď tej doby nemohlo už nič zachrániť. Až 30.minút po zrážke nariadil kapitán Smith vysielať SOS. O skutočnom rozsahu poškodenia však svojich dôstojníkov a ani cestujúcich neinformoval. Ubehlo ďaľších 20 minút než bol vydaný rozkať spustiť záchranné člny a umietniť v nich ženy a deti. Aj keď dôstojníci vedeli, že na lodi je vyše 2200 cetujúcich a viac než 800 členov posádky,zatiaľ čo člny stačili sotva pre polovicu,dopustili aby prvé člny odišli poloprázdne. Tak prišlo zbytočne o život daľších niekoľko desiatok cestujúcich, ktorí sa mohli zachrániť. V podpalubí tiež cestovalo veľa vysťahovalcov do Ameriky-tým ani nikto nepovedal, že sa loď potápa. O 2:20 ráno, dňa 15.apríla 1912 sa Titanic potopil. Než sa však potopil,asi 150 metrov dlhá zadná časť sa pod tlakom vody a svojou váhou od potápajúcého sa trupu odlomila vrátila sa naspäť do vodorovnej polohy. Veľa ľudí si myslelo, že sa zachráni, tak sa naňu vyšplhalo. Tá sa však naraz naklonila o 90 stupňov a pomaly sa začala potápať. Volanie SOS zachytila ako jediná odpovedala loď Carpathia ktorá bola od Titanicu vzdialená asi 6 hodín plavby. Keď na miesto katastrofy dorazila na svitaní,zobrali členovia posádky na palubu už len 711 trosečníkov.Nado ostatnými sa zatvorilo more. Ešte dva mesiace po tragédíi boli v severnom atlantiku nachádzané telá utopených a zmrznutých ľudí. Takto sa skončila prvá a aj zároveň posledná cesta slávnej lode Titanic. Teraz leží na dne Atlantiku v hĺbke 4300 m niekoľko desiatok kilometrov od New Foundlandu.
